Methodism has been long established in Shipston on Stour.  The first known record can be found in John Wesley’s Journal – March 1738:  Tues. 15. – About eight, it being rainy and very dark, we lost our way; but before nine, came to Shipston....... After supper I read prayers to the people of the inn, and explained the second lesson.

John Greenhill, a local businessman, became a class leader to a small Methodist Society, which in November 1828 took out a 40 year lease on land in New Street from the Dean & Chapter of Worcester Cathedral to build a chapel. In 1864 Shipston Methodists (known as the Wesleyans) purchased the land upon which the chapel stood. The present church building was built on the same site as the original chapel and was opened in 1881.

As part of the Millennium celebrations we extracted the original 1881 time capsule from the wall and opened it in the presence of television cameras from our local BBC news programme.  When we replaced the time capsule, we added an additional one with items from the year 2000.

The fortunes of the church have varied over the years but we continue to provide a variety of service styles and activities at the church. On the first Sunday of the month we have a cafe church/messy church service called TLC (Teaching and Learning with Christ), complete with bacon butties! TLC is the main activity that attracts our young people. We also have a monthly Prayer and Praise service on the third Sunday evening in the month which is a more contemporary service that tends to be a little more reflective than normal morning worship.

We have several fellowship groups that meet fortnightly in people’s homes and at the Church. We also have a weekly coffee morning on Fridays and a monthly coffee morning on the third Saturday of the month.  These activities are supplemented by a range of social events throughout the year.

We are a happy, welcoming church fellowship who delight in extending a welcome to any visitors or new members.  You can be sure that a warm welcome awaits you.
